Area Projects

Area projects included in the transportation bill that passed the U.S. House this month and is awaiting Senate action:

  • $7 million for improving Curtis Road in Champaign .
  • $5.4 million to widen and build a bridge on Winter Avenue in Danville . "The intent is to provide a safer access point to Winter Park, and includes money for a handicapped-accessible playground and bathrooms" at the park, said Phil Bloomer, a spokesman for U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson, R-Urbana.
  • $1.6 million for a complete renovation of the Mattoon Depot, which serves Amtrak and bus lines.
  • $1.1 million to create a truck route between Interstate 72 and Illinois 105 in Monticello. The route will direct truck traffic around the city and downtown area, Bloomer said.
  • $1.5 million to help create a UI day care facility at the South Research Park in Champaign.
  • $5 million to create a facility for Normal that will serve as a new hub for buses, trains and airport facilities.
