Johnson's stem cell position courageous
July 16, 2005
I must applaud U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson's courageous stand against the use of surplus human embryonic blastocysts for stem-cell production.
Granted that stem-cell research does show promise for ameliorating some diseases in man. However, we already have ample access to umbilical and adult-derived stem cells that do not involve the taking of human life.
Rep. Johnson is keenly aware that his powerful position demands a powerful duty to do the very best he can in protecting all human life.
I know Tim Johnson well enough to perceive that he realizes that he eventually will have to be able to defend his actions on that largest of all stages.
Mr. Johnson has always recognized that the right to life, whether blastocyst, embryo, Terry Schiavo or the dying Pope John Paul II should never be trumped by another's right to pursue an illusory happiness.
I only wish that all of Illinois ' elected officials were as principled as Rep. Tim Johnson.
Bravo Rep. Johnson!
